Tips for Troubleshooting a Slow PC
  • Usual fixes
    • Disk Cleanup
    • Scandisk
    • Defrag the hard drive
    • Checking the System Resources

If these do not work try the following

  • Scan for viruses
  • Check for overheating
  • Check for DOS compatibility mode
    • If the system is running Windows 9x, make sure that the hard disk isn’t running in MS-DOS compatibility mode.
To check this, open the Device Manager, right-click on the hard disk in question, and select the Properties.
  • To compress or not to compress
    • Severe slowdown can happen if drives are compressed. You can check a disk’s compression by right-clicking
on the disk in My Computer and selecting the Properties
      .
  • Check for application or driver issues
    • You can check driver issues by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting the Properties, then choosing Hardware and
Device Manager. Look for any icons appearing yellow with a exclamation point
